Do you have a USB port? If so, couldn't you get a USB to serial adapter?

Is there a clear direction to go regarding higher comports?
I am just now considering WriteLog, but want to avoid the pitfalls.
I have the usual COM1 IRQ4, COM2 IRQ3, LPT1 IRQ7, a PCI modem: COM3 IRQ9,
and a Byterunner 2 serial 1 parallel PCI card which uses a single IRQ 5 for
COM4, COM5 and LPT2. The PCI modem will shortly be replaced by a NIC, which
will probably use IRQ9.
I currentlty use DXBase2000 with Win98. COM4, COM5 are used for
RadioControl (ICOM781) and PacketCluster (MFJ12770C) and LPT2 for a laser
printer. I am using these 3 ports for rather standard applications with the
idea that the 'regular' ports COM1, COM2 and LPT1 will be available for the
more 'exotic' applications, such as CW generation, FSK (5 bit) generation,
antenna switching, paddle imputs etc.
Is it valid to assume that these 'exotic' applications work on the built in
COM1, COM2 and LPT1, or can this vary from mainboard to mainboard?
Is the Byterunner 2S1P PCI going to be a source of trouble. If there is a
better choice I am willing to start with a clean slate and just use boards
which are known to be completely happy with Writelog. I intend to replace
my computer with a current model, at that time I could obtain a different
2S1P or 4S com card if something else is more compatible with Writelog.
