Barnett TSK TSK,

Actually, that statement about consensus on ECARS is not accurate as I've been
keeping track of
my mobile station check-ins since the beginning of the year. Tell me GL where
did you get that information...was it a mis-statement or just your personnal
opinion? Just kidding...

Barnet and I frequent ECARS and although I haven't counted up from my list I
would guess there are at least half the stations using the 706s...well, just
wait a minute and I'll do a quick count right now -- hmmm it took more than an
hour and the results indicate that 706 operators number about
a third of my check-ins over the past six months with a variety of models being
used by Kenwood and Yaesu owners. Clearly, ICOM's strategy to limit it's
mobile equipment to a single radio appears to be working for them from a cost
to produce (fewer models, etc)...look at how many different Yaesu and Kenwood
models are being used in mobile. However, with that said Kenwood and Yaesu
have been serving the mobile community in the HF area for some time now while
ICOM is a fairly new entry -- still plenty of TS 120s, 130s, 140s, 430s, 440s
mobile as well as Yaesu FT-7s, 707s, 747s, 890s, 900s, etc. Also, the FT-900
was only offered for four years while I think the three versions of the ICOM
706 spans several years.

Results in general from my list of check-in on ECARS 40 m mobile net by
manufacturer:

ICOM ................ 35
Kenwood........... 33
Yaesu................. 23
TenTec............... 6
SGC................... 3

By Model Type:

TS -50.................. 17
TS -570................. 2
TS -690.................. 1
TS -430/440/450... 7
TS -130/140........... 6

ICOM 706............... 30
ICOM 735/737....... 2
ICOM 720............... 1
ICOM 707............... 2

FT-747/847/840/890/900....19 (there were nine FT-900s of the 19 Yaesu rigs)
FT-100................................... 2
FT-7........................................ 2

TenTec Scout......... 6

SGC 2000.............. 2
SGC2020............... 1

DX70....................... 6

Hope this helps you out a bit...when you get mobile please check-in with us on

HAVE FUN,
dave
