My personal suspicion is that the series R is an ill-conceived attempt at a "glitch resistor" that will act like a big fuse if something fails or arcs, protecting the tubes. AS for your one tube glow

Sure, no argument - though problems in one tube (2 and 4) seem to be pretty well ruled out by the fact that it is always the front tube that glows more brightly, regardless of which tube is in which
