My experience with DXing is much like you state Jim but on really weak DX, I'm constantly twisting knobs trying to optimize the RX....RF gain, BW, high and or low cut, APF and its frequency settings.

Very subjective. My Orion II is very good but I do find my Icom Pro III to have better intelligibility in many cases. (SSB) All with identical external speakers/headphones. I will have to say it also
