About 10 months ago, the capacitors on the A9 Power Distribution board failed, and I sent the radio back to the factory to get it fixed. Well, just 10 months later, the same thing happened again. Thi
For Firefox users like myself, you'll need to use Internet Explorer to view Ron's web page on this fix. Firefox does not support the .mht format. 73, Alan N5NA http://www.tentecwiki.org _____________

What is the fundamental cause of these failures? Are the capacitors poor to begin with, or is the circuit ripple or voltage excessive? Is there AC being applied to a DC capacitor? Is one wired in bac

This was very well documented in the press. A Tiwanese engineer worked for a Japanese manufacturer of electrolytics. He stole the formula for the electrolyte (the liquid inside the capacitors). His e

Here is a link to a pretty complete SPICE analysis of the A9 board - its the bottom line in the table. The issue is RIPPLE current. Hank K7HP _______________________________________________ TenTec ma

I purchased my Orion in August of 2005 from Ten-Tec. In March of 2007 smoke came out of the Orion, and it was returned to the factory for repair. In the invoice, Ten-Tec wrote "Replaced fried 10 volt
I can see RF and power supply problems causing the first failure, but that A9 board capacitor problem seems to hit everyone eventually! Ron N6IE www.N6IE.com _________________________________________
Hank: Excellent analysis! Can I please link to that from my page? I believe, based on this link that there is a direct connection between ESR and ripple ratings: http://wiki.xtronics.com/index.php/Ca

Then low ESR and high temperature rating are a benefit, but the fundamental is that the capacitors need to be rated FOR the ripple current. Good electrolytic makers know and publish such ratings. Som

Almost but it doesn't give a number for the heat transfer capability of the package. That is vitally important, the larger the case, the better that heat will be transfered to the air and environment

Work that Tentec apparently has failed to do. Looks like there are capacitors capable of giving long life in the circuit based on the computed and rated ripple current, and many that won't give a lon
I hope it will run more than 2,000 hours too! According to Hank, that number gets multiplied by a factor for lower temp, in this case 1.7 for 80 degree C operation (it's actually much cooler than tha
Ron - a word on how the 22.7 multiplier comes about - It is not just voltage - Illcap says going from 35 volts to 6 volts approximately a 2X multiplier is valid for voltage . The rest of the multipli
Hopefully we have made enough noise here that TT heard us and is aware of the problem! They should re-evaluate the specs for these capacitors and immediately upgrade their unsold stock and future run
The TenTec capacitors in my O 565 and O 566 were NOT Chinese made - nor were any others of which I am aware (about 5 other Orions) - they were made by Illinois Capacitor - the capacitors were of good
Well, my O II quit right before a contest weekend that I had hoped to pick up a few new ones. Called Ten Tec and upon describing the symptoms, was told it was most likely two capacitors on the power
