Open fields have their downside too. My house and tower are on what was a cornfield. Every tree there I paid for. It's nice not hassling with trees for the tower, but supporting wires is a problem.
Hi all - I am in the process of doing some station layout changes and some recabling in the process. Just for the heck of it, I pulled an old (maybe 20 years?) 20 ft length of a no-name, foam dielect

There have been some interesting theories proposed lately, such as leaving your tower and antennas ungrounded so as not to attract lightning. Here's a better one, follow my logic... The W2UP thereom
I have a better one (no joke here). Last year, while I was on the computer and modem, lightning came in thru the voice phone line and did the following: Blew the house alarm system, which is mounted
Good question, Pete. In theory, the idea of going below the frost line is to prevent heaving of whatever is buried, so it doesn't reappear at the surface some day, from earth movement of the freeze/t
Hi Steve - I just purchased a DX-77 just yesterday. It's still in the box. I was looking for a simple antenna for the second radio, to permit SO2R and M/S operation. I asked the same question recentl
(snip) I asked Roger Cox of Hygain whether putting radials under a DX-77 vertical (also a vertical dipole) would be of any benefit. He said NO. 73 Barry -- Barry Kutner, W2UP Internet: w2up@itw.com N
One experience I've had with State Farm (NOT a tower claim) is the check was made out jointly to me and my mortgage company. The deal was I had to sign the check, forward it to the mortgage company,
Yes, Thanks Bob. You do have your numbers reversed. a pH of 1-6.99999 is acid, and a pH of 7.000001 to 14 is alkaline. And 7 is neutral. 73 Barry -- Barry Kutner, W2UP Internet: w2up@itw.com Newtown,
Then we the people can vote for another group who wind up acting the same way. That is, do what's best to keep me in office or help me get ahead, not what's best. -- Barry Kutner, W2UP Internet: w2up
Here's a question for the group: My Cushcraft 402CD is above my top TH7. It does not protect the top TH7 from precip static, but my lower TH7 is very quiet when the upper is very noisy. Wouldn't one
Bob - Here's another testimonial: I built (into my own enclosure) the CMOS Super keyer III shortly after the article appeared in QST. It is a GREAT keyer! BTW, who at the White House will use the kye

That is exactly what we did with my Rohn 45 and 20 ft mast. To pull up the mast from the bottom we used some BIG washers (that I seem to recall were delivered with the tower and hardware, but I don't
I am thinking about adding a second radio/station here. My single tower presently consists of 76 ft of Rohn 45 with a pair of TH7s, a 40-2CD and wires on 80/160. I do NOT want to put up a second towe
Hi all - Lately, I've noticed the static produced by rain seems to be a lot louder than in the past. The only change I've made to my system was improve the tower grounding (from 3 ground rods with cl
Fred - You may have hit the nail on the head. 90% of the time, my antennas point E/NE. For the last few weeks, they have been pointed west most of the time. 73 Barry -- Barry Kutner, W2UP Internet: w
