The power company installed a remote reading sensor on my meter.  I noticed a noise increase. Took a portable receiver into the basement and found noise along a very old house ground to my water line

A lot depends upon location. Multiple Short 3 foot rods here in Maine, would not be effective some years. The ground in winter can freeze down to 4 feet.      Frozen earth  is close to an insulator.
