Hi Drax, Sounds like a classic case of "resonant plate choke" to me... Did you ever couple the choke to a grid dip meter beforehand, to see where its natural resonance(s) may have been...? Most likel

It was an Ohmite Z-50 choke that exploded the first time. That's what Orr Radio Handbook 23rd edition uses on its 6m amp. On 2013-04-12, at 9:07 AM, Drax Felton wrote: So I've tried two different pla

REPLY: I remember the Ohmite Z-series chokes. That are effective chokes precisely because they are self-resonant around the frequency of their nomenclature, i.e, Z-50 = 50 MHz. They are ok for filter

Hi all Possibly high RF current on the plate RFC - meaning it has a hole on 50 MHz. I have burnt a plate RFC in my 6m RF deck because of parasitic oscillation around 60 MHz. But 8877 must be quite st

So I've tried two different plate choke designs on my 6 meter 8877 amp I'm trying to build. Both times the plate chokes have violently exploded as soon as I apply 5 watt or less RF input to the amp.

There shouldnt be a problem with a Z-50 as they are self resonant around 70 MHz. OTOH they may explode if subject to a shorted tube or a wild parasitic but the 8877 is not a parasitic prone tube in a

A couple of thoughts, Drax. First, re the Z-50, as Carl notes, it has a self-resonant frequency of about 70 MHz, with a note on the Ohmite data sheet saying that stray capacitance and external circui
