Jim, So, I was just asking if anyone on Amps had tried using an SCR to control a large choke-input power supply ? I haven't done it myself, but I have worked with equipment from the 1970s that worked

SCR control of an inductive load is not so cut and dried simple as some would like to think. The gates of SCR's need to be pulse fired for reliable phase control. Commercial units have pulse train bu

Racal regulated all power supplies in their TA1800 amp with SCRs except anode voltage. They used transformers with 205V primary for the heater, the bias and the screen of the 4CX10000. The screen vol

Paul, and all, The gates of SCR's need to be pulse fired for reliable phase control. Commercial units have pulse train burst applied to the gates through a pulse transformer. The phase angle of the b

In the early days, we just used a Diac in a simple circuit. No big pulse and no series of pulses. Once the threshold was reached, the SCR was in control of the rest including how fast it turned on. W

We were precisely phase controlling the firing of large phase control (made by Semikron) 300 amp 1600v SCR's for full regenerative control of 50hp 3 phase motors in lifting / lowering applications. T
