What is the purpose of the signal report in the exchange for the ARRL 160m contest?   That is the question posed by my 10-year-old son after he wandered into the shack as I began operating last weeke

It's not a signal report. It's a "catch your breath place marker" to signal the next thing you hear will be their ARRL section. In CQWW it's there to alert you to visually confirm that they send the

So, when I have my rf gain cranked up, and filters in, with a ton of qrm around, how exactly do you propose I determine what a true signal report is?? What if my rig has a non-functioning S meter? Ca

Of course, your son is correct. It serves no purpose (any longer) other to tell the other guy, "get ready, here comes the part you actually have to copy." In theory, the same is true for CQWW, except

There is no such thing as a "real" report. The ARRL realised that many years ago, and it's why no reports are needed on QSLs for ARRL DX awards. Is it time for the Contest Branch to follow suit? DXer

About 60% of the signals at my station are S-0 or less with the Beverages. So, I am supposed to make up a signal report that will be just as much a "lie" as the canned 5NN. I guess the only thing to
