I use a surplus UIPS gel cell in my old Moto Guzzi police motorcycle. What I have found works well is to keep it charged during the winter with a so-called "battery tender". I buy them from J&P Cycle

I would advise care when charging this battery. If you charge it too aggressively, you will cause too much gassing, which in turn will force small amounts of gas out the safety vents if the pressure/

Well, not any charger. You wouldn't charge a 7Ahr SLA with a 10Amp Automobile charger. But as long as the Amps of the charger are in line with what is recommended for the battery you should be fine.
