John, I don't know the capacity of your TX455 gearbox but it would not be over one quart. My HDX589 gearbox takes exactly one quart. As you probably already know it is important to flush the old gear

Some of the articles that I read said sludge can prevent aged gaskets from leaking.  When synthetics are used, they tend to dissolve the sludge and leaks then occur.  Also, early synthetics were not

Here's the thing about synthetic oils. The molecules in DINO (conventional old style without the zinc additive) oil vary all over the place in size. In synthetic oil, they are all very close in size.

I assume you drain the oil out the bottom all I see is an Allen head screw is that the drain? Same on the top.. I assume again that is the fill. Do you just fill to the top or is there a way to check

Jeff, You have it right. The allen head plug near the bottom is the drain plug. The one higher up near the top is the fill plug. You fill just to where it begins to come out the fill hole, just like

My Hub City box on the UST HDX589 has one plug near the bottom and only one more on the side near the top. No plug on the topside. Hub City said never to fill past the upper plug. There is a flushing

OK. Skip recabled my tower about 8 years ago and replaced several sheaves. He mentioned changing the gearbox lube. I decided to do that myself. Glad I changed the lube, the old lube looked pretty bad
