Hi all, Great topic! Each gear setup is designed for a specific load/relative surface velocity in order to give good service. Spur gears can be run in the open at very low velocities with zero lubric

That's very true. Long ago there was an article in QST...might have been by/for KH6IJ, about his method to control that spin....IIRC, he attached a cord to the brake latch and the other end to a bri

I dont want sabotage our worm gear discussion but wanted to throw in a question about gear lube for a worm gear box. I am going to change the gear oil in my US tower box. It is a Hub City worm gear.

PolyAlkyline Glycol lubricants are part of the new API Group V Synthetic lubricants and have unique characteristics lending themselves to gear oils. In general they have very high shear friction, ass

Hi Rick, It needs to be a specific synthetic gear lube. I called Hub City and they recommend their 460 PAG for worm gears. They said that the Mobil 1 Glycol 460 is what they are using. My Hub City wo

For those of us who own US Tower models with the Hub City boxes - how often should we be changing the lubricant?   I see no mention or concern whatsoever from US Tower on the matter. My tower is now

Just guessing but suspect lube change intervals are keyed to working time and load. Unless you "play" with your tower a lot it might take a long time on the calendar to rack up much actual working ti

Hub City touts their helical gear units, at 90+% efficiency vs 60% for worms. I don't know about their resistance to back driving, but at 50-60:1, it wouldn't take much of a brake... WL --Original Me

The torque differential between driving the input and output of a worm gear drive (driving the worm, versus driving the worm gear) is largely dependent on the pitch angle. You could call driving the
