For those of us who own US Tower models with the Hub City boxes - how often
should we be changing the lubricant? I see no mention or concern whatsoever
from US Tower on the matter. My tower is now approaching 5 years in service, so
it is in the back of my mind..........

Hi Rick,
It needs to be a specific synthetic gear lube.
I called Hub City and they recommend their 460 PAG for worm gears.
They said that the Mobil 1 Glycol 460 is what they are using.
My Hub City worm gear box takes over a quart so I am ordering 2 quarts.
BTW, they should not be filled to the top. About 30 % air space should be
left for thermal expansion.

and below that the specs on the Mobil 1 460 they are talking about.
I am ordering mine on line, not stocked anywhere locally.

I have no idea what is generated burning store-bought duraflame fire logs. I
know that, brunt "wrong" generate a lot of chemical compounds, creosote being
one of them. I still wouldn't recommend putting anything near a chimney. I know
what my TV antenna looked like after a few years next to (on top) of my
chimney. Not a pretty picture.

The biggest problem is corrosion. Any oil burner
generate a small, but
significant amount of acid that will corrode your tower,
antenna, rotor,
etc. faster than away from the chimney. I have not seen any
problems with
soot.

The viscosity is only part of the equation.
I might be a comparable viscosity but there are many other ingredients
that are formulated into the lubricants for specific applications.
The gear lube we are discussing is a synthetic lube specifically formulated for
worm gears.

Think about it, that chimney is connected to a wood burning stow. I guess wood
gives off acid as well.
