Most important - check the lubricant level periodically - especially if there
are visible signs of seepage around the seal areas. There are sight plugs at
different locations on the housing which are used for different mounting
positions. For horizontal input shaft positions with the input shaft at the
top - look on the flanged face parallel to the input shaft. For horizontal
input shaft with the input shaft at the bottom, use the plug on the flanged
face parallel to the output shaft. The other mounting positions are
irrelevant as they would not be used on tower drives.
The nature of how we use most towers does not result in very many accumulated
hours, so primary lubricant life factor is contamination. Contamination
results from daily temperature cycles wherein the box "inhales" air through the
vent cap as temperatures cool and "exhales" as they rise. A little humidity
comes in with each breath. Over time, that humidity can potentially condense
and starts to contaminate the lubricant. Although breakdown occurs naturally
over time, it becomes accelerated with elevated temperatures. This is one
area where the synthetics have come a long way... In any event, we really
don't run these gears on towers long enough to heat up the lubricant very much,
so breakdown would be very slow.
But now to answer your question, Hub City recommends changing the gear oil
every 2,500 operating hours for petroleum based lubes, and every 5,000 hours
for synthetics - OR - every 6 months for petroleum based lubes, and every 12
months for synthetic based lubes. I would say the time interval requirement
is overly-conservative CYA that covers a multitude of possible applications...
but that is only my opinion.
Hope this info is helpful to you.

For those of us who own US Tower models with the Hub City boxes - how often
should we be changing the lubricant? I see no mention or concern whatsoever
from US Tower on the matter. My tower is now approaching 5 years in service, so
it is in the back of my mind..........

Mobil 1 LS comes in 75W90 and 75W140. Which is correct
for Hub City? Is 1 quart enough for a gear box?

Hi Rick,
It needs to be a specific synthetic gear lube.
I called Hub City and they recommend their 460 PAG for worm gears.
They said that the Mobil 1 Glycol 460 is what they are using.
My Hub City worm gear box takes over a quart so I am ordering 2 quarts.
BTW, they should not be filled to the top. About 30 % air space should be
left for thermal expansion.
Heres some Hub City info on worm gear lubes, (below)
and below that the specs on the Mobil 1 460 they are talking about.
I am ordering mine on line, not stocked anywhere locally.

I have no idea what is generated burning store-bought duraflame fire logs. I
know that, brunt "wrong" generate a lot of chemical compounds, creosote being
one of them. I still wouldn't recommend putting anything near a chimney. I know
what my TV antenna looked like after a few years next to (on top) of my
chimney. Not a pretty picture.

The biggest problem is corrosion. Any oil burner
generate a small, but
significant amount of acid that will corrode your tower,
antenna, rotor,
etc. faster than away from the chimney. I have not seen any
problems with
soot.

I have limited options for placing my 40' tower and tribander at my
QTH.
One of
them is next to the 2 story house very near the 33' chimney.
Am wondering if
anyone has experience...soot affecting rotor or antenna
parts?

Matt,
The viscosity is only part of the equation.
I might be a comparable viscosity but there are many other ingredients
that are formulated into the lubricants for specific applications.
The gear lube we are discussing is a synthetic lube specifically formulated for
worm gears.

Think about it, that chimney is connected to a wood burning stow. I guess wood
gives off acid as well.
