Just guessing but suspect lube change intervals are keyed to working time and load. Unless you "play" with your tower a lot it might take a long time on the calendar to rack up much actual working time. On the other hand it might be cheap and easy enough such that you might just do it and feel better. Be sure to inspect the old lubricant. You can pour it (or a representative sample from a stirred master volume) into a clear container (I like glass peanut butter jars from Laura Scudder) let it settle for several hours (multiple days is OK) and then carefully pour off the top to see how much, if any, powdered metal or (heaven forbid) metal flakes there are which are wear indicators. Big flakes can = big problems. A little powdered metal may be no big deal on the first lube change (wearing in/breaking in) but may indicate an incipient problem if you get plenty of powder every time you change lubricant. I typically put a magnet in lube samples to get a feel for how much steel is wearing, if you have steel under load and moving in your equipment.

Hi Rick,

It needs to be a specific synthetic gear lube.
I called Hub City and they recommend their 460 PAG for worm gears.
They said that the Mobil 1 Glycol 460 is what they are using.
My Hub City worm gear box takes over a quart so I am ordering 2 quarts.
BTW, they should not be filled to the top. About 30 % air space should be
left for thermal expansion.
Heres some Hub City info on worm gear lubes, (below)
and below that the specs on the Mobil 1 460 they are talking about.
I am ordering mine on line, not stocked anywhere locally.

I have no idea what is generated burning store-bought duraflame fire logs. I know that,
brunt "wrong" generate a lot of chemical compounds, creosote being one of them.
I still wouldn't recommend putting anything near a chimney. I know what my TV antenna
looked like after a few years next to (on top) of my chimney. Not a pretty picture.

The biggest problem is corrosion. Any oil burner
generate a small, but
significant amount of acid that will corrode your tower,
antenna, rotor,
etc. faster than away from the chimney. I have not seen any
problems with
soot.

I have limited options for placing my 40' tower and tribander at my
QTH.

One of

them is next to the 2 story house very near the 33' chimney.
Am wondering if
anyone has experience...soot affecting rotor or antenna
parts?

Matt,

The viscosity is only part of the equation.
I might be a comparable viscosity but there are many other ingredients
that are formulated into the lubricants for specific applications.
The gear lube we are discussing is a synthetic lube specifically formulated for
worm gears.

Think about it, that chimney is connected to a wood burning stow. I guess wood
gives off acid as well.
