Hi All Problem solved! Joe's response got me thinking - I changed over to my onboard AC97 chipset, and everything works 100$... even had a quick QSO with SV1GSV/8 just to make sure!! It would appear

Barry, Many of the low end Audigy sound cards have only a single input shared between mic and Line. If you go back to the Audigy, make sure it is set for LINE ... otherwise you will overdrive the mic
