Bob, the key here might be that you used to have a UPC connected. The software for that might still be running, and detecting the signals from the radio as a UPS loss of power and causing it to shut

This sounds very much like you have a UPS configured for COM1. Go to Control Panel, Power Options, and click on the UPS tab. Select a Manufacture as "none" and that should solve it. -- Bruce Ferry, A

The clue is that you had a UPS connected there.. I bet you that there is still an instance of the UPS shutdown software still looking at that serial port. I would uninstall the UPS software and then
