I took a look at what CTWin is sending out the RS-232 port. On initially loading, it issues commands to the radio to set both VFOs and read the frequency and mode. That's why CTWin correctly displays

Thanks a zillion!  Makes sense. Setting TRN to "ON" did the trick.  I think that's what Jim had in mind when he said a setting to make the radio "babble." I don't know how I missed that.  I thought I
