Comments:

With increasing sunspots I had high hopes for breaking the 5th call area record
I set last year year but those hopes were dashed â?" first by a storm February
1 which damaged 6 of my 10 antennas and then by below par conditions on 15
meters, my â??money bandâ?? last year. Still, I can take some consolation from
a new personal best for total multipliers in this contest.

I put in a lot of hours the week before the contest repairing antennas
including an unsuccessful two day attempt to fix my damaged 40 meter Moxon on
the tower (taking it down for repair was out of the question). I had to settle
for a NE-SW dipole on 40 to go along with my NW-SE Lazy H. Fortunately I was
able to get the last of the other antennas repaired shortly before the contest
started.

Testing things Friday morning, G6PZ was 20db over S9 on ten and it looked like
it could be an exciting weekend. Though I managed to G6PZ again Saturday, he
was just above the noise level on a skew path - so much for big numbers on ten.
Still, the 13 Europeans I ended up working were the first on ten meters in this
contest since 2005. Comparing my ten meter numbers with others though it is
obvious I spent way too much time there when I should have been on 15 or 20.
Too much of the DXer in me.

The low bands were again excellent. Despite the loss of my 40 meter beam I
actually had more multipliers there than last year and my 80 and 160 totals
were my best ever. Overall I had an amazing 69 more multipliers than last year
â?" 32 more on ten but 36 on the low bands! Unfortunately my QSO numbers were
down by 462, 352 of that on 15 meters.

Along with CQWW this is my favorite contest but I would enjoy it even more if
there were a limit on the number of hours â?" the fatigue of operating 40+
hours reduces the fun factor, takes a couple of days to recover from, and
doesn't help family relationships. With the number of contests one can enter
these days I also wonder if 48 hour contests might be a relic from the past
(remember when each mode was two weekends?).

See you on SSB in two week.

Marv, N5AW
