There is something quite satisfying about seeing/dealing/Working with the
components of HI power RF...
Working around them are kind of like experiencing a live Rolling Stones Concert.
QRP which has its own rewards and satisfactions, isnt quite the same, but might
be like attending a
Celine Dion Concert... enjoyable, but not the Stones...
Some years back, I organized a Ham radio tour of KGO AM transmitter site and
studio in SF.
and Jim Johnson, took a bunch of good pictures, including the matching/feed
systems at each of
three phased vertical towers, literally in the waters of South San Francisco
Bay. About
as perfect a text book example of verticals over a salt water ground plane as
you can get.
Another AM station that will get the adrenalin flowing, if you get a close
tour, is WSM in Tennessee.
If you drive by it on the north south running highway between Indy, and
Huntsville, be sure to take the exit by the famous Blaw-Knox tower, and stop
in. The engineer there when I stopped by was quite happy to give the grand
tour, and there are some BIG inductors, and capacitors WSM's tuning house.
Capacitor plates the size of Xtra large pizza pans, and Inductors of 3/4"
silverplated copper pipe.

Jim took pictures of our KGO tour, and somewhere in them are pictures of the
phasing/matching units at the base of each tower, with the large copper pipe
inductors and capacitors, used in the 50KW AM antenna system. Also some
shots of some BIG volts and amps, metering, on the final PA. 70 volts at 700
amps or so.
