[Amps] Fillament choke

I am sure there is going to be a simple answer , but why are ferrite rods the 
"preferred" method of construction verses toroid cores, I ask because I have a 
few ft240-43 cores and only 1 rod, winding 10 gauge on a core may be more 
difficult but there must be another reason ?
