My desktops aren't really desktops. they are full size tower cases with
multiple core CPUs running well above 3 GHz. These cases are big and
heavy. Each one has 3 140mm fans in front cooling the HDs. There is one
10" fan on the side blowing into the case to give the GPU fresh air.
There is another large fan on top of the case and 2 140mm exhaust fans
on the back. The CPU has a 120mm fan running relatively low RPM, The
GPU has two fans and a very large heat sink to get rid of the 300 plus
watts it generates. I'm sitting between two of these monsters which
weigh between 50 and 60#. They make what sounds like white noise so I
don't really notice it *until* I try to listen to the rig, or my wife
calls me from some other room. For the rig, a headset works great. My
wife has learned that she needs to come into the den, but so far has
chalked it up to my hearing.
I'm very seriously considering converting them to water cooling (the
tower cases are already for it) It'd go to almost silent and get a
whole *LOT* cooler in here from now until about late October.
