Greetings:
I found this on the DX reflector today. I believe it would
be of interest to this group.

What an unbelievable weekend from the not-so-black hole. Haven't had this much
fun since we had sunspots !
Great JA openings on 15, 20 and 40. The 40 meter JA opening was surprising -
on Sunday AM, the MUF stayed high enough to keep the band open during the
0900Z-1200Z period when the MUF to JA usually falls below 40 meters. Good EU
on 20, but making a hole on the band so that I could hear the 100 watt/dipole
crowd was really tough. 15 meter EU was mainly southern EU. Considering the
lack of sunspots, I'm not complaining. Not a peep on 10 meters until after
1900Z both days. The LU activity on 10 seems to double every contest. Keep up
the good work down there !
The biggest propagation surprise was Saturday AM, when 20 "almost" opened to EU
at 0730Z, and stayed "almost" open until it "really" opened around 1200Z
(almost 1.5 hours before sunrise). The "almost" opening was really odd - lots
of pretty loud EU stations, but it was almost impossible to break through the
EU QRM and be heard in EU. This was the strongest case for "1-way skip" I have
ever experienced in a contest - some of the EU stations who CQ'd in my face
were S9+. The same stations had no trouble hearing me when the band "really"
opened. 15 opened very early on Saturday AM - worked my first EU around 1230Z.
However, the early opening did not lead to a widespread, strong opening like
we used to experience when there were sunspots.
Good JA/DU/YB opening on 20 Sunday morning around 1400Z-1500Z. I felt somewhat
strange running JA on 20 while everyone else was running EU ! Was hoping that
XZ, XU, VS6, BY or JT would call in while I was running those JA's, but no such
luck !
Many thanks to those few EU stations who pulled me through on 80 meters. Heard
many more EU stations around 0630Z Saturday AM between 3700-3750 who never
listened in the USA band.
