A real fun weekend with amazing results in breaking some pileups that
I had no business even trying with low power.
Since I had run a few hours high power in SS Phone and my neighbors
can always attest to the fact that I am running high power, I decided
to do the right thing this weekend and run low power so that they didn't
have to come up with some additional nasty names for me. Low power
doesn't seem to affect anyone in the neighborhood ...... I had fun, they
had fun, and we're all friends once again.
Packet here was great with about 100 nodes connected. It was amazing
seeing the spots roll by quickly and trying to keep CT9.27 announce fields
clean. I enjoy the technology of being able to jump right to a spots freq,
work them in 45 seconds and jump back to the main frequency immediately.
That's almost as much fun as breaking a big pileup with 100 watts.
The only run I was able to generate was Saturday morning on 15 meters. It
lasted great for a couple of hours. On Sunday, I planned to do the same
thing and early on, the band sounded real good, and I started to run, but
suddenly all I could hear was the big gun signals. It seemed that in a
matter
of a couple of minutes, the band cooled down and it was search and pounce
from that moment on. 20 meters was just too crowded to do much with
low power and running.
10 meters produced very little. I did work work a couple of ZS stations and
3B8/W6ZZ.
Still a great contest and hopefully next year I can be DX from somewhere
in the CW contest (my neighbors will like that!). This year, I was part of
the VP5WW crew on SSB, but CW is where the soul is!

However, I did not hear either station sign their calls frequently.
I heard both of them go through QSO after QSO without signing. It is
very frustrating to have our time wasted trying to figure out whose
pileup this is. Our time is just as important as theirs.
At the speed HC8N and ZD8Z were working people, an identification
every 3 Qs was way less than a minute to wait, if that. I've never
been on the DX end, but if I were, gave my callsign and had 3 or 4
people call me, it would make sense to me to work 3 people and then
give the call again. Both these stations gave their call where others
might send QRZ? and I heard quite a few people sending "call?" right
when these guys were actually sending their calls. They usually didn't
send "QRZ? de ZD8Z", just "ZD8Z".
For future reference, anyone sending 59936 at 40+ wpm is always ZD8Z,
and 59910 ditto is always HC8N.... people like this wouldn't keep
turning in winning scores if they weren't doing something right.
BTW, for those getting ready for The Only Real Contest next year, if
I understand the relevant algorithms, CQWW weekend is the one before
Thanksgiving next year, as happens 1 year out of 7 on average, so you
folks who complain that you can't put in a full effort won't have any
excuse then. Well, where I come from, Thanksgiving isn't that much
of a deal anyway!

Just got off the telephone with Roger Western (G3SXW) in Accra, Ghana. With
the contest behind them, he and the other members of the TY5A CQ WW CW team
(K5VT, GM3YTS, N7BG, KC7V and G3SXW) are now en route back to their
respective home QTHs.
At present, several CT .bin files still need to be merged before a final
claimed score can be posted. This will not be completed until Roger's
return to London. However, the raw data shows more than 10,000 QSOs and a
score that will be somewhere around 21 million points as a multi-multi
effort.
Towards the end of the week, you are welcome to visit the TY5A home page
where the final score and observations by the contest team will be posted:
