Isn't NN3SI the call for the Smithsonian Institute club station?

Message-ID: <199610061942.OAA22966@eve.telalink.net>

Just curious...

How thoroughly do other state QSO Parties check their logs? How much
evidence of error do you require before docking someone a QSO? Do you
delete a QSO you believe to be wrong even if you don't have the log to prove it?

(example: I have several logs claiming QSOs with VE3TEE. Other logs claim
QSOs with VA3TEE. I happen to know (through various non-ham circuits..)
that the VA prefix is right. But, Andy hasn't sent a log and I don't expect
he will. Would you delete QSOs with VE3TEE?

Another example: one of the more active stations in-state (and in a rare
county) has a call with a "K" on the end; let's say for arguments' sake it's
W4IJK. I have two logs claiming QSOs with a W4IJ in that county. Again, I
haven't received a log from this station, and don't expect to. Should I
delete claimed QSOs with "W4IJ"?)

This is kind of an interesting follow up to some previous questions I have
posed to the group.

This weekend I nearly completed putting up the elevated radials for my new
4-square for 80 meters. I did install one of the verticals and used it on
80M on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Signal reports were great.

I took down the 80 meter Delta Loop I had up, and interestingly I also
noticed that I now have no blinking lights in the shack when transmitting on
80 meters. I also noticed that my problem with 20 meters trashing 15 meters
went away. Not sure how to explain this one. Just glad it's gone.

----

On a different note... worked many Europeans on 15 meters this morning.
Several commented about the void of New England stations on the band. One
said he had worked a station in Wisconsin but hadn't heard any W1's on the
band. I noticed the same thing in reverse. Normally when 15m is barely
open to Europe, I hear Italians and Spanish stations. Today it was 20db
over G3's and the I's and EA's were S5 best case. Worked only one DL
station who was VERY weak.

Getting psyched for WW again!

Hello contesters,
In his reply on a message regarding stations calling CQ in de CW portion of
40 M, GI0NWG writes:

Well here in Belgium it is also "legal". Nevertheless you will not find me
operating SSB below 7040 KHz, or even hand out points there. Besides
"legality" there is also something as the IARU Recemondations and the
bandplan is one of these. Although these recemondations or not law most of
us have folowed them. The selfregulations to wich most amateurs stick or
one of those things we can be proud of.
Let us not forget that IARU is our representative at the ITU and defends our
interest there. Not folowing the IARU recemondations, wich are voted there
by the representatives of our national organisations, wich we elect, is in
my opinion not having HAM-spirit.

I do not want to start a war either, but please think about this before
going outside the bandplan.

73's and have a good contest.

I was strolling through the booths at the New England ARRL Convention in Boxboro
MA yesterday, and was surprised to see Dave Wilson, G3SZA/AA0RS manning the
"ETO" booth. Turns out it was'nt the ETO booth this time - it was the
"Alpha/Power" booth, and will be from now on.

According to a one-page flier in the booth and a very pleasant conversation
with Dave, here is the straight scoop on ETO/Alpha.

As many of you know, ETO was acquired last December by AS&E, a Massachusetts
company with no interest whatsoever in ham radio. A few weeks (maybe months
) ago, AS&E spun off the amateur product line to a new entity now named
Alpha/Power. Principals are Dick Ehrhorn, W4ETO, as Chairman of the Board, and
Dave Wilson, G3SZA/AA0RS as President.

Dave is moving the company about 100 miles away from its present location, and
does not expect that all of the present employees will make the move. Ray
Heaton,
for example, lives close to the old location, and will not be moving to the
new location. HE will remain with the company for a short while.

Dave told me about attempting to clear out the backlog of amplifiers that were
in for repair. They would start working on an amp, then a customer would call,
and the time spent explaining the delay to the (usually angry) customer further
delayed repairs on all the amps. So Dave ordered that the phone go unanswered
for a few days while the got caught up.

Around this time, someone got upset that nobody answered his call, and started
the rumor that the company had gone under. Sigh.

THe repair backlog seems under control now, except for amplifiers for which
parts are unavailable. There is a current problem with sourcing one particular
component for 91Bs, but Dave thinks that will be cleared up soon.

Dave is a very good guy. He genuinely wants to make the business work, and
believes that he can do it now that the distractions of the commercial/
medical amplifier business are gone. He knows that customer service has been
a problem, and is taking steps to fix it.

He mentioned some of his plans - for example, starting a program to allow
owners of 76As and 374s to replace the RF/tube decks with 3CX800-based decks.
This would be cheaper than buying a new amp, and probably cheaper than re-tubing
a 3-hole 8874 amp (he says new 8874s are over $400 now). He has some ideas for
new products, and hopes to have something for Dayton next year.

He also recognizes that contesters make up a big part of the market for high-
end amplifiers, and he aims to keep us all happy.

He's getting a Web page up to allow easier communication with customers, and
welcomes suggestions for new products, service improvements, etc. I'm sure he
would welcome your inputs.

I view this as great news for contesters, and thought I would share it with
you all.

Give Dave a call (or better yet, wait for his Web page and send him Email so
he can finish fixing amplifiers without interruptions, or write a letter). Tell
him you read the news here (so he'll know that the gang on the contest
reflector is behind him).

73,

Doug K1DG

p.s. usual disclaimer applies - I have no financial interest in ETO or
Alpha/Power. I know Dave, and wish him well in his venture. I also hope that
the next
time my 76PA croaks, it will take less than 6 months to get it fixed (which it
took last time, even after I got several cards and letters advising me it would
be returned "in one more week").

Hi All,

I just got my first taste of contesting this weekend by working some
stations in the California QSO Party. I would like to try this again
for the Pa. QSO Party and I see in QST that the exchnge will include
your "ARRL/RAC section #". How do I find out what this number is.

Sorry for the "dumb" question but the more I learn about this hobby the
less I know. <GGGGG>
