At KC1XX we worked last JA on 40 at 14:53Z Saturday a.m. - that's 9:53
local time, well well after sunrise.
Band opened to Europe (well, we could work guys but not run) around 18Z -
that means only about 3 hours when you couldn't work anyone.

I failed to state the obvious --because I thought it WAS-- that very
few "coded" Technicians know the code. Isn't this what this is all
about? Do we find them somehow more "legitimate" and/or "acceptable"
because they once went through a "rite of passage" that had absolutely
nothing to do with what kind of amateur they would be?

If I'm not mistaken, a "real" Pig Farmer's net used to meet on 3830. At
times, these guys would clash with contesters exchanging scores. Hence,
the name "pig farmer's" has become associated with any "good-ole boy" who
QRMs us contesters. Just think-- what if a YL sewing net used to meet on
3830.

Ok, so every time a little gun gets in a contest and writes several
paragraphs about his effort, you want it cross-posted? Or is the
cross-posting rule only permitted for top-ten finishers?
Personally, I get a lot out of these contest stories -- but a lot of the
stories don't make sense unless you can peek at the score or band
breakdown. 3830 seems the natural place for this, IMHO.
(PS - I read just about every comment posted to 3830, even if I didn't
participate in the contest. I often learn something from them, even the
pipsqueak efforts)

Of who contest using computers with their rig operation,
do you turn the computer on each day; the rig each day,
or leave them running all the time (monitor powered down
at night, or perhaps it goes into a sleep mode?)
I've been told computer warranties are for the time period of
a year or whatever, whether the machine is on or off cycled
or on forever. About a year ago this topic was discussed, and
many felt the computer should be left on ALL the time for
component long life. Power consumption is relatively low
as long as the monitor is down.
Old days, DX'ers never turned the rig off, but that was a
temperature/frequency drift issue. Wonder about my "new"
1000D with the temperature oven about the crystal: should
the D be left ON all the time?
I have had to replace the hard drive in two computers during
the machine's first 11 to 24 months out of the box. Not related
to drive bearings, but too many disk errors; defrag would not
even run without running scan disk, and then that would not
run. Gateway replaced one still within the warranty, the other
I had to pay for, as it was just out of warranty! These
computers were turned off late each day, and back on the
following AM, 7 days a week; probably should be just
left running.
