Hi Randy,
I have also often pondered the same question. When I am casually
looking around during a contest I usually wind up working guys for the
following reasons:
1- They are friends that I have made throughout the years.
2- They are quick with the reports and don't fidget and fumble
through each qso. The longer I have to wait to work them the higher
the chances I will spin the dial away.
3- They are LOUD!
4- It's someone sending at a high cw speed so I call him at his speed
or higher just to see if he really can copy at that speed.
5- It's one of the more well known contest calls that I have worked
in previous years. (Vanity calls have taken care of that reason)
This is not all intentional but depends upon the way I feel at
the time or on how much time I can spend looking around. When I'm
serious in a contest I give it 100 percent of the allocated time. When
I'm not serious I average about 1 hour looking around. I suspect that
being loud is single most important criteria for the non contester to
call you. The louder, the better!

I'm going back thru old logs entering the contacts into the DX

program. I'm realizing that in years past I would work a few
stations
in contests even though I wasn't a contester. Sometimes just one or
two stations. But they are the ones that win these contests.
What is it that makes the casual operator stop and work a winning
contest station? Besides a catchy name like Tree? -hi
