When describing contesting to my friends, I liken it to something they
understand.
I explain it is very similar to them working on their "Hot Rod" all week
long, and then going to the "Drags" on Saturday night. Since this is rodeo
country, I also compare it to rodeoing. In both sports there are many
parallel comparisons of categories.
I tell them, "You then put your rod/pony and your own driving/riding/roping
talents up against the rest of the guys".
In our case, with contesting, we compete with a like minded group across the
whole country, continent, or world. That gets their attention.
That explanation suddenly makes amateur radio contesting visible to them in
their minds.
