I would hardly call Joop a friend but we did work many, many times over the
last several years.
Interestingly enough, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation today promoted
a show on Monday dealing with a mysterious kidney infection that has
claimed the lives of thousands of Central and South American men over the
last several years. I immediately thought of Joop's untimely passing.
The program will be aired on CBC Radio 1 (AM) on Monday, Jan. 23 during The
Current (8:35 am to 10 am EST). The program is available on the internet
(www.CBC.ca), on many PRI stations in the US, and on Sirius satellite 139.
Some of you living close to the Canadian border might be able to pick up
the CBC.

Very sad news.
I had an opportunity to meet Joop two years ago and borrow one of his
bicycles to tour the island.
He will be missed.
