I was always under the "assumption" that the log checking software would
catch and flag submission errors like this. I didn't count the QSOs in
the W9IL log, but if there were 100 lines with "4", and W9IL's LCR
showed 100 zone 5 errors, is there not a "quality check and report" that
would have spotted and reported that inconsistency to the adjudicators?
I do understand it's the operators responsibility to submit accurate
information, but. . . And I do understand that all 100 stations who
worked W9IL would be penalized equally, but. . . If enough of these
types of human errors enter the log checking process, there certainly is
some chance of an impact in a tightly contested category. That said, I
did poorly in my statistics class so I can't offer any probabilities! :-)
So my question is: Is there a mechanism in the log checking / scoring
process that tries to catch this type of issue?

There are much better ways to report these issues than via the contest
reflector. A look at the public log reveals the problem.

W9IL submitted a log showing all sent exchanges as zone 4.
Computers are very happy doing simple checking. They are not so smart to
know when the input data is incorrect.

Same question/request goes to the log checkers! Or how else would such a
thing happen? ;-)

Definitely copied correctly (my contest software defaulted to 4, had to
change it manually to 5) but the log checking software had it wrong! Not
that it would have made a big difference in the final ranking but still
there's some potential ... ;-)

Yup. I haven't lived in zone 5/PA for 7 years, and still see quite a
few miscopied zone/state errors in my LCRs. I am listed as a
zone/state exception in the SCP file. How hard is it to update it at
least once a decade? :-)

My log checking report was a very interesting reflection of the role
of computers in today’s contesting world. I operated QRP from our new
winter QTH in Florida (actually at a waterfront park, not our condo).
But to the computer world, I’m in zone 4, presumably back in Ohio.
Out of my 536 valid QSOs, 196 “copied” me in zone 4! An additional
six guys who miscopied my call also put me there.
I expected a lot of such errors, as I could tell from the rhythm of
the QSO that a lot of people had not taken the extra second to type a
“5”. But the number of miscopies, or more precisely non-copies,
greatly exceeded expectations.
I’ll be back in zone 4 in another week, so don’t move me permanently
to zone 5. Just copy what I send !
