Actually the hourly legal ID is supposed to be the call sign of whoever the
1x1 was assigned to. For example, K1N for the Navassa DXpedition was
assigned to K4UEE and I actually did hear those ops (at least the phone
ops) around the top of the hour say something to the effect of, "This is
K4UEE operating as K1N." However, I must say that's probably the only time
I ever heard a 1x1 station use the trustee's call at all!

Whenever I operate a 1x1 I always ID with my own call every 30 minutes at

That is one of those rules loosely followed on Field Day I believe (from
observation). Same as who is watching the stations at 3:00 AM when all
the
extra class hams are asleep? Have you been to a FD where the operator’s
meeting before kickoff stressed that if you are operating outside your
privileges, make sure there is a control operator around or stay in your
privileges?

That’s just like the one later down the page in the FAQ that states the
ID
requirements of a 1x1 station. When was the last time you heard the
hourly
ID from a 1x1 station (especially if they use it for a DXPedition). I
have
listened to stations for the whole hour and unless the normal 500 watt
station reduced their power to 1 watt, I have yet to hear the 1x1 hourly
ID
with a regular call. Well our club does it but we stress the point to all
the ops at the top of the hour.

Q. We will be using a special 1 by 1 callsign for Field Day. Is there
anything special we must do?

A. Yes, at least once per hour each station using the special call must
also ID with the FCC-issued station call. (97.119(d))

For those that were interested in the subject of Control Operators,
Unlicensed Operators participating in contests, and the application of
Third
Party rules, you might want to read the ARRL Field Day application note
concerning the subject.

As far as I was able to observe, the rule was followed by the one by one stations competing in WRTC 2014. I have always done so when operating as N4A and K3Y. 73, John, K4BAI.
