I suggest a very short antenna.
You want tolimit pickup to your immediate vicinity
so you can relate what you are hearing to what
you are looking at.
You need to be able to move the radio close to the noise
source before hearing it.  Otherwise, you don't know where
it might be coming from.

Another idea would be to use a short length of coax, say 6 ft
or so,with a small probe wire sticking out from it.  Then you
can wave the probe around without having to wave the radio
too.
