This is a great testing topic for ARRL Labs. Honda vs Yamaha vs Harbor Freight inverter gens. 1, 2, & 3kw. versions.

From some anecdotal data and a deep dive into the HF 3kw electronics the results may be surprising.

Always put a K9YC design generator CM choke on the line too. I do that then a commercial RFI line filter for more than CM suppression.

The best test is to bring a portable shortwave radio, and listen before you buy...  Most places, have a demo generator set up.Make it clear to the vendor that if the unit is generating RFI you will be returning it, with the expectation of a full refund.

I am considering the purchase of an emergency back-upgenerator. For the first time, I have encountered unitstagged as “inverters”. Does this mean that some systemsare AC generators while the “Inverter-types” generateDC and then convert it to AC?    “Inverter” immediatelyprecipitates the worry of RFI.  Comments, please.
