I'm not using writelog, but I do use a USB/Serial cable (from pccables.com)
with my laptop and a CAT controller for my Yaesu with no troubles at all.

Subject: [RTTY] IOGEAR usb to serial cable questions
Greetings fellow RTTY operators. I have some questions for any of you that
have gotten an IOGear USB to serial cable to work with a laptop to provide
band/frequency info to Writelog. I am at a dead end. Here is my setup: HP
N3402 laptop with ME and 2000 pro, serial port com1 goes to a rigblaster
interface box to an Icom 706 MkIIG and works fine with the radio. This is
my portable setup that I have used in several contests, so far so good.
Now, I am attempting to add the freq/band info to writelog via the usb to
serial cable ,but just can't seem to get this to work. I have tested this
cable with a tower PC and it will go from USB to serial no problem. I am
beginning to suspect that it might be something with laptops not putting out
enough to make this work. I am using this homemade interface between the
706 and the PC: http://www.qsl.net/g3vgr/civ.html Thanks so much if
anyone knows the answer. If nothing else, I have learned a lot about 2000
prof and drivers, etc. Good luck in the next contest, best regards, Dave,
NC6P.
