You mean people don't back off on the RF gain as a matter of course?
I've been doing it for years and years.  It's the only way to fly.
Heck, I just did the NAQP CW contest the other day and looking back at the
Omni VI's, both RF gains are at about 1 and 2 o'clock positions.
