I have been using an manual tuner for years and would offer these
thoughts:
1. I can usually tune the antenna matching unit close to resonance just
by peaking received signal strength or band noise
2. Minimum RF output is almost always sufficient to achieve final
resonance adjustments.
3. A chart of tuner settings, at about 100 KHz intervals can often help
met avoid on-the-air tuning unless my antenna is coated with ice or
otherwise off resonance.

Subject: [TenTec] Tuning Rigs
Hi
I usually tune my jap rig (Yaesu FT 100) with an aototuner;
the foldback saves the finals. My Omni V requires the
time-tested method of adjusting the manual tuner for lowest SWR,
raising the power and repeating (just asi the pi networks did on the old
tube rigs).
If the SWR is too high, the 960 shuts down.
On the Yaesu, I use CW to tune the rig; much quieter (and legal; see FCC
rules about
superfluous communications).
