I have run RTTY on the Orion II both ways without an interface other than a
small Behringer mixer board to control levels for AFSK and a simple
one-transistor interface built into a parallel port connector for true FSK.
The true FSK works best because the ALC doesn't have to 'hunt' around to
find the right power level, and it probably makes a cleaner signal since
some small amount hum and noise is always present on an analog audio chain.
Both methods to get the heat sync warm when used in RTTY contests,
especially if running the full 100 Watts as in the NAQP contest. A small 12
VDC computer fan keeps the temperature down.
