John, it's probably easier to build an outboard receiving converter, than to modify an existing Scout module. I'd prefer to leave the module intact, unless I had a scrap one. Scout modules have become scarce. Plans for LF converters abound in various publications.

Mike: Yes, crystal control would be the way to go, especially since the second harmonic of the PTO would fall in the 5 MHz band. However, crystals have gotten costly, and again, we wouldn't want to destroy an original working band module.

Some people buy a second Scout just to get the band modules that they need.

I've never tried it, but had this grandiose idea of converting one to the 60 meter band. Using crystal control, and ignoring the PTO, it would basically be crystal controlled and you would select the proper "channel" with a small switch on the module. The PTO would not be used.

of course the pto signal would still be required, so I figured that could be crystal based as well.

it was just an idea and I never dug into it any deeper. Hell,I don't know if it would even be possible (for 60 meters) to do.

has anyone modified a scout module to receive on different frequencies. i would like to tune down to the LW band - 100khz - 500 khz for beacon hunting. it would seem that it should be pretty easy. maybe a crystal or two. has anyone tried it?
