I tend to agree with you. I typically use, at least on HF radios, PC software
to control the radio. I can deal with either approach. I'm more concerned about
receiver performance, particularly phone performance. I have a growing interest
in DX, nets and want to try contesting, so my radio priorities are built, in
part, around these activities.

I have visited the shacks of a number of people with a variety of radios, and I
like the sensitivity / selectivity of both radios. I think that, based on
comparison videos, the 5000 might hold a slight edge. I dunno...there is, as
the British say, nothing between them. It may simply come down to which one
works better with my Quadra...I'm not wild about the lack of ALC on the O-II.

You don't need but 3 or 4 knobs to run a radio.

Sitting before the FT 5K is like sitting in the cockpit of a 747.
At the end of the day, all of those knobs do nothing for performance.
Performance depends on the design, components, and execution of the front
end of the radio (and of course the DSP behind it). The knobs just look
impressive without adding to the receiver's ultimate ability.

Well, that depends on which particular brand patriots I'm talking to... :)

But seriously, yeah...either a O-II or FT-DX5000MP. Close to decision.

So ... you must be going to buy a TT Orion II ? I suppose that is the
only "higher tier" radio worth having ....
