All - I believe that theory is correct for only for the very low frequency 
signals (<500Khz) where the wave front is nearly perpendicular to the earth. 
This isn't the case at 1.8Mhz where the signals arrive at low angles.  I for 
one have wondered for years whether so called Beverages on 160 are not really 
just long antennas with useful azimuthal and vertical radiation (reception) 
patterns and the noise discriminating feature achieved by the velocity factor 
differential not available on the ham bands.. ??
