There are two REALLY good reasons for having directional receive,
whether you're on a desert island or not.
1) QRN will often be 10-15 dB louder in one direction than other,
and skipping in from great distances just like the DX you're trying
to work.
2) QRM will often be 20-30 louder in one direction than another.
Example -- loud stations from a highly populated country who are
loud single hop from you won't shut up when you tell them to, and
wipe out weak 3-hop and 4-hop stations from the other side of the
world.
In both of these situations, directional receive capability can
help a LOT.
