That East-West problem is almost a daily occurance over here with EU and 
especially with a vertical. Ive had relatively decent results with a 180' 
high dipole until the angles shift to favor the verticals.

On 80M Ive often heard EU 2-3 hours before sunset but again we are just too 
weak to get thru the din which is the norm on both bands in EU.
