I suppose it goes without saying that the easy part of the
aluminum joint to clean (the visible outside surface) is
necessary, but not sufficient. The internal surface needs the
same TLC before mating the surfaces.

The green Scotch scrubbing pads made of non metalic stuff and
sold
for pots and pans is great for cleaning alumn. tubing.
No liquid mess, no metal fragments, just a clean joint--something
lots of
folks are looking for these days!
