A very rare Heathkit and an extreemly useful controller. Can be operated
remotely by serial port. Remote Base? You Bet!!
Description:
The HD-1780 was designed by Heath for Telex as an OEM product. The factory
assembled versions were sold with the TailTwister and other Telex (Later
Hy-Gain and CDE) rotators and distributed through Telex's dealer network.
Manufactured 1990-94. It was also available in kit form from Heathkit by mail
order. This unit is a one owner factory assembled unit sold by AES in 1990 with
a T2X TailTwister rotator (T2X not included). The HD-1780 is compatible with
the popular Ham-M (series 3,4,5 and 6), Ham-II, Ham-III, Ham-IV, T2X, CDE,
TR-44, CD-45 (series 2), HDR-300, and M2. Uses 8 wire control cables.
The QWERTY keyboard lets you swing the antenna based on entry of callsign
prefix, grid square, latitude and longitude, bearing in degrees, or first few
letters of the country, or manually. The unit has a ROM database of 400
countries and allows you to add 10 headings of your own. The HD-1780 also can
be connected to your PC (DB-9) (with supplied software on floppy disk) and can
report headings in 20 wpm morse for visually impaired users. Features include
motor pulsing, automatic brakes, and initial back-rotation to protect brakes
from locking due to wind loading.
The IntelliRotor can be controlled remotely by a PC or other serial terminals
or interfaces. This makes the IntelliRotor desirable for Remote Base Operation.
Built in diagnostics test ROMs, RAM, serial port, LCD, and LEDs.
To help prevent jammed brake problems the IntelliRotor first rotates the beam
in the opposite direction, then stops and rotates in the desired direction and
slows down as it approches the correct heading. This method also prevents
damage at end of rotation limits.
