Lee,  Your 1/2 correct. The main purpose of the base coil on the Butternut is 
for matching. The antenna is short on 80/40 so it is used as a shunt to ground 
to cancel out reactance.  The better the grnd radial system the less inductance 
you need (spread the coil out). On a Butternut I once had up, I had 32+ radials 
out to 50' or so, and I ended up with a scrap box coil of abt 3 or 4 turns/2" 
in diam. The supplied coil was to big. (I don't know why, but I keep selling 
the Butternuts.....Then I buy another, used of course). Good luck with your 
project.
