So, the conclusion is (and I hope I'm right) to paint everything outside with 
some guaranteed UV resistant paint. Keeping the experience with other materials 
in mind we might not trust that either because some enviro-nut managed to 
change the composition of that too. It would be nice if we could use wood and 
metal everywhere as that seems to keep up regardless of changing times,

Unfortunately, grey PVC is another example of
"mystery material".  It seems to be a crap shoot.
Some kinds are UV resistant, other kinds "burn" badly within
a year and seems worse than white PVC.  Of course
it all looks the same in the store.

BTW, I've never seen 12 foot lengths of conduit.
