Thanks for the info, but I am trying to understand how those insulators with 
their loops on each end insert into the tower leg and the base.

Gordon,
Next time you are at N2MO, ask Jeff to see the power line insulators for 
the wire antenna.    I have ground off the metal ends off the fiberglass 
rod and used them for loaded tower applications.   If you want to grab a 
set,  reasonable ofer to the treasure are accepted!!

Failing that, McMaster-Carr sells machinable garolite rod that can be fitted 
inside the leg of the tower.
