Modeling is getting easier all the time. There are a lot of places that you
can get free trial software - Solidworks and Nastran, for example - and buy
it if you have a real project where you can use it for profit.
There are a even more packages available with Gnu Public License (GPL) or
in the public domain that are better than calculating everything with
forspreadsheet for FEA. -

So take advantage of your company education opportunities, talk to some of
the software vendors and get eval software and perhaps online training! You
won't know if they're useful to you unless you try them, and if you try
something that's germane to your work environment, your company might
purchase it.
