K1DG has a presentation he's done for Contest University.  Per his study
over time, he estimates that a 1dB improvement in your station results in a
6% score increase in a contest.  Now, I don't know his methods, nor the
accuracy of his study, but it certainly seems plausible.

1 dB at any single point in time won't make much difference, but over the
course of a weekend, yes, it matters.
